Two rabies vaccinations are required: a primary vaccination followed by a booster at least 30 days later. Both must be administered after microchipping. Vaccinations must be current at the time of travel.
An import permit from the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) must be obtained before travel. Apply via the DAFF online system. The permit specifies the approved quarantine facility.
An official health certificate issued by a Canadian government-accredited veterinarian within the required timeframe before travel. Must certify the dog is healthy, microchipped, vaccinated, and that all treatments have been completed.
A rabies antibody titre test must be performed by an approved laboratory and show a result of ≥0.5 IU/mL. The test must be conducted after the booster vaccination. A mandatory 180-day wait period applies after the titre test before the dog can travel to Australia.
Dog must be implanted with an ISO 11784/11785 compliant 15-digit microchip before any vaccinations or blood tests are performed. The microchip number must appear on all accompanying documentation.
All dogs entering Australia must undergo 10 days of post-arrival quarantine at an approved AQIS (Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service) facility. Quarantine fees apply and must be paid in advance. Currently the only approved facility is in Melbourne (Mickleham).
Treatment for tapeworm (Echinococcus granulosus and E. multilocularis) must be administered by a veterinarian within 5 days before travel. A certificate of treatment is required.
